We learned about self-awareness in class, understanding oneself is the first step towards self-realization and is one way to examine the current self. Today, I'll be exploring my strengths and weaknesses in terms of my career, using the five-step method I found online as a reference.
The article suggests that strengths and weaknesses heavily depend on the situation, so this time I'll consider the context of finding a job.
5Steps to identify strength and weakness
1. Determine what skills, knowledge, and style of application will bring the desired outcomes and changes to fruition.
2. Review which of those you believe you have.
3. Rate how close a fit you believe what you have is a fit to what is required (e.g. 10 might be a perfect fit and zero represents no skills, knowledge, or application capability).
4. For ratings you ascribe yourself above zero, ask yourself how easy or challenging it is for you to apply the skills, knowledge, and understanding.
5. Ask yourself, “What did I enjoy the most?” and “What did I enjoy the least?”
Context: Find my first career job
Step1
The majority of job searching involves clarifying what one wants to do and what they seek in a job, and then effectively presenting oneself in resumes and job interviews. How well one can convey themselves as attractive candidates is crucial. (except academic qualifications)
・Self-exploration, self-understanding
・Writing skills
・Ability to confidently speak in public settings
・Public certifications that can be listed on resumes
・Clear vision for one's future
・Problem-solving skills
・Punctuality, etc.
Step2
I believe I possess:
・Self-understanding
・Problem-solving skills
・Punctuality
・Writing skills
Step3
Rating (1-10)
9/10 Self-understanding
7/10 Problem-solving skills
8/10 Punctuality (I mean this in Japan, not here...)
6/10 Writing skills
Step4
Self-understanding:
Even though I may have self-understanding, finding companies that desire my strengths isn't easy, and aligning my strengths with the ideal image sought by companies is very challenging.
Problem-solving skill:
Handling problems that arise during the job search process might be relatively straightforward. I believe I am adept at seeking support from external sources or others and doing my best to address issues.
Punctuality:
In Japan, I rarely miss deadlines or arrive late for meetings, always allowing plenty of time for actions. Therefore, being faithful to time is relatively easy for me.
Writing skills:
While I can articulate my thoughts in writing, transforming them into formal and public documents may be somewhat challenging for me at this point.
Step5
Problem-solving
whether in hobbies or challenges, has always been incredibly exciting and enjoyable for me.
Writing
This can be enjoyable in activities like keeping a diary, writing letters, or certain writing assignments. However, when it comes to formal writing, I sometimes find it painful.
Through this process, I have come to recognize that problem-solving is a strength for me, while writing is a weakness. Recognizing these, it's important for me to further develop my strengths and work on improving my weaknesses to find a job that suits me.
